GEOGRAPHIC SITUATION : An enclave in Western Africa, limited to the south by the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin, to the east by Niger, to the north and to the west by Mali.

PRIMARY SECTOR

 

 



AGRICULTURE : Nearly 75% of the population are farmers, the land is state-owned. Agriculture drives economic growth in Burkina Faso. Cereal crops (millet, sorghum, corn and rice) cover 80% of the cultivated areas. Revenue crops are more productive, mainly cotton which is the country's most important ressource. Peanuts are the second most important revenue crop.

LIVE-STOCK : Burkina Faso's live-stock comprises 4 500 000 beef, 14 121 000 sheep and goats, 563 000 hogs; poultry-farming numbers 13 390 000 heads.

FISHING : Annual production reaches 7 000 tons while the country's needs are estimated to be 13 000 tons.

FOREST : An inventory of Burkina Faso's forests revealed there are only 2 173 600 acres of land left for timber production.

MINING : Burkina Faso's mining potential (manganese, bauxite, copper and zinc) is quite important. The deposits currently mined are gold and phosphates. Gold production is performed through industrial, semi-industrial and non-industrial methods.

SECONDARY SECTOR






Despite being poorly developped, the industrial sector comprises about a hundred units, concentrated in Ouagadougou (50) and Bobo Dioulasso (23). The most developped industries are : oil-mill by-products, food products, leather and hide, construction materials, textile, ...


TERTIARY SECTOR






The ROAD NETWORK has been extended to 8 150 miles, 1 139 miles bitumized and 4 544 miles of trails. Burkina Faso having no coast-line, it enjoys TRANSIT HARBOURS in Ivory Coast, Togo and Ghana.

The RAILROAD NETWORK is limited to one only railway : the Kaya / Ouagadougou / Bobo Dioulasso / Abidjan line, 718 miles long.

The BANKING SECTOR, with its restructuring nearly completed, saw a surge in its activity which attracted new banks to the country, such as : ECOBANK - BANK OF AFRICA - SGBB - MERIDIEN BIAO - FINANCIAL BANK.

The INSURANCE sector is handled by three companies (SONAR - FONCIAS - UAB) operating in a healthy environment.
