PRESENTATION

OFFICIAL NAME  : REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION : Situated at the heart of the Gulf of Guinea, Cameroon sits on the hinge of the African Continent, between western Africa and central Africa. It is limited to the west by Nigeria, to the north and to the east by Chad and the Central African Republic, to the south by Congo, Gabon and Equitorial Guinea. It enjoys an 174 mile-long Atlantic front.

AREA  : 183 548 sq miles

CLIMATE : The climate in Cameroon is divided in two great climatic areas :
The northern zone : tropical Sudanese climate with average temperatures around 86° and peaks at 113°
The southern zone : marked by 3 main seasons :
1. A long dry season (November to February)
2. A short rain season (March to June)
3. A long rain season (August to October)

PRIMARY SECTOR






AGRICULTURE : Agriculture occupies a dominant position in the Cameroon economy. Agriculture is Cameroon's main source of revenue, it represents one quarter of its exports, and employs 80% of the country's active population. The products: coffee, cocoa, sugar, palm oil, bananas, pineapple, onions, ...

LIVE-STOCK : The live-stock numbers 5 900 000 beef, 3 900 000 sheep, 3 800 000 goats, 1 400 000 hogs, 20 000 000 poultry.



MINING : Cameroon posseses important mining ressources, whose production has remained at a non-industrial stage, except for oil. The country produces bauxite, iron, gold, limestone, aluminium, marble, ...

FOREST : it covers 47% of the lands (54.34 million acres) and thus makes up an appreciable ressource, since 80% of the forest can be worked. Unlike other countries, this forest capital has been highly preserved. The main essences produced are ayous, sapelli and azobe, making up over 60% of the national output.

Cameroon equipped itself with an industry which amply contributed to its development. Facing the crisis after-effets, the Cameroon industry is attempting today to reorganize an efficient restart of its' activities. Supported by the financial backers, the restructuring effort is geared towards liberalization and the State's disengagement from the productive sector.

TERTIARY SECTOR






The ROAD NETWORK  : Numbers about 30 925 miles including 24 277 miles for the classified network, and 2 298 miles of bitumized city streets. A 174 mile-long freeway joins Douala to Yaoundé.

The HARBOURS : Three main operators still dominate the sector : SOAEM, SCAC DELMAS VIELJEUX, CAMEROUN SHIPPING LINES (CAMSHIP).




The BANKING SECTOR : At the end of 1998, it numbered 9 commercial banks, 1 leasing company, 1 real estate credit establishment, 1 land credit company, 1 postal financial network, over 500 micro-credit organizations, among which a large number of cooperatives.
