PRIMARY SECTOR |
Ivory Coast's AGRICULTURE
is based on export goods such as coffee, cocoa, cotton, banana and pineapple.
There are some diversification channels (sugar, oil palm trees, hévéa,
cotton, cajou nuts, karité nuts, mangoes, oranges, green beans)
but these occupy only a very limited part of the international market.
The coffee - cocoa channels employ some 700 000 growers and support some
4 to 5 million people.
Ivory Coast's LIVE-STOCK
comprises 1 180 000 beef, 2 120 000 sheep and goats, 382 000 hogs, while
poultry-farming numbers 25 000
000 heads.
FISHING is an exception in Ivory Coast's economy.
It satisfies local demand only partially and requires imports.
In terms of its FORESTRY
RESSOURCES, Ivory Coast numbered 38.5 million acres of
forests at the beginning of the century. There are only 7.16 million
remaining today, of which 3.95 million are forest zones, and 3.21
million savanna zones.
The MINERAL production comprises gold, diamonds,
nickel, iron and ornament stones.
The ENERGY production comprises oil (622 000 tons/year),
gas (estimated reserves of 17 000 billion gallons), electricity
(2 800 million GWh).
SECONDARY SECTOR |
FOOD PROCESSING represents about 25% of the secondary
sector's GDP. The activities related to raw materials transformation, namely
coffee/cocoa but also wheat, fruits and oil-produce, have progressed.
THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY, 3rd national manufacturing
sector, dates back to 1511 and went through rapid developement during
the sixties.
THE RUBBER INDUSTRY rests on 172 900 acres of
rubber-gum land.
In addition, Ivory
Coast has industries in the following areas : plastic, packaging, chemicals,
pharmaceuticals, tobacco, timber, public works and construction materials.
TERTIARY SECTOR |
The main HARBOURS are ABIDJAN (1st West African harbour) and SAN PEDRO.
With 4 996 miles of
ROADS and trails, 3 287 miles of which are bitumized,
enabled during all seasons, the country
enjoys the best road network in Western Africa. The RAILROAD is 718 miles long, with 396 miles
in Ivory Coast and 322 miles in Burkina Faso.
In 1998 THE BANKING
SECTOR
is dominated by 4
large banks : SGBCI - BICICI - SIB - BIAO-CI.
