GEOGRAPHICAL
SITUATION : 435 miles away from the sea, situated
in the middle of Western Africa, Mali is surrounded by seven countries :
Senegal, Mauritania, Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Guinea.
AREA : 478 714 sq miles
CLIMATE : The climate and vegetation are divided
in three zones :
· In the north, desert zone, herbaceous vegetation (Saharian zone)
· In the center, very hot Sahelian zone, thorny vegetation
· In the south, Sudanese climate, a domain of savanna and clear
forest.

PRIMARY SECTOR |
AGRICULTURE
: It is very dependent on rain and fertilizers. Production varies
by 25% according to the rain level. With breeding, agriculture is
the backbone of the malinese economy. The export production is mainly
made up of cotton and peanuts. Other productions : millet, sorghum,
corn, rice, fruits and vegetables...
LIVE-STOCK : The malinese live-stock comprises
4 703 000 beef, 11 055 000 sheep and goats; one numbers 22 000 000
poultry heads.
FISHING : Performed on the Niger river loop, fishing
employs some 100 000 individuals and produces 100 000 tons in an
average year, of which at least 20 000 tons are exported to the
nearby countries.
MINING : The extraction industry comprises phosphates,
bauxite, manganese, marble, gold...
SECONDARY SECTOR |
The country's enclaved
position makes industrial development particularly difficult. The main branches
of activity are building and public works, food processing, electricity,
water and textile.
FOOD PROCESSING : Cotton has enabled the development
of this sector represented by HUICOMA, SODEMA, ACHCAR, GMM, GAM...
LEATHER AND SKINS : Supported by an important
live-stock herd, with 3 active companies, this sector has discovered new
opportunities on the local and export markets.
TERTIARY SECTOR |
The ROAD NETWORK : The malinese network numbers some
31 067 miles of roads and trails : 1 664 miles of lined roads, 992 miles of
modern earth roads, 4 343 miles of improved trails, 24 254 miles of seasonal
trails.
The RAILROAD NETWORK
: It spreads over 399 miles, in one unique line KOULIKORO / BAMAKO
/ KAYES which crosses the Senegalese railroads in KINDIRA.
The RIVER NETWORK : The traffic is carried out on
the rivers Niger and Senegal over a total of 1 450 miles : 813 miles of national
lines with 18 stops among which 5 main harbours, 151 miles of international
lines and 487 miles of local lines.
