SITUATION : Niger is surrounded by seven
countries : to the west by Burkina Faso and Mali, to the east by Chad, to
the north by Algeria and Lybia, to the south by Nigeria and Benin.
AREA : 489 138 sq miles
CLIMATE : There are 2 climatic zones (Saharian in
the north, Sahelian in the south) :
- hot season from March to May
- cool season from November to February

AGRICULTURE
: Concentrated in the south of the country on a 124 mile wide east-west
traversal strip. It employs 87% of the population. The main productions
are subsistence crops (millet, sorghum, rice, corn). The revenue
crops are cotton, peanuts, niébé. Farm or counter season crops are
oignons, garlic, pepper and tomatoes ...
LIVE-STOCK : 2 100 000 beef, 10 000 000
sheep and goats.
MINING : Niger enjoys an important and diversified
mining potential and mainly draws its livelihood from its mineral
ressources. In addition to uranium, its main ressources are : coal,
cassiterite, phosphates, iron, gold, oil, salt, molybdenum...
SECONDARY SECTOR |
Besides mining
and energy, Niger has several industrial units in domains as diverse
as food processing, construction materials, printing, chemical industries,
equipment, textile... This sector underwent a serious decrease of
its activity following the decline of uranium and subsequent over-taxation
of the industry.
FOOD PROCESSING : Breweries and slaughter-houses,
the pillars of food processing, continue to run satisfactorily.
MINING INDUSTRY : The main establishements are
: ONAREM - SOMAIR - COMINAK - SONICHAR
TERTIARY SECTOR |
The ROAD NETWORK : Niger has a road network of less
than 8 700 miles (of which 6 213 miles are maintained), 2 237 miles of bitumized
roads, and a little less than 1900 miles of "modern" earth roads.
AIR TRANSPORT : The air infrastructure comprises
: 3 international airports (Niamey - Zinder - Agadez) and 12 secondary aerodromes,
the most important being Arlit.
