PRESENTATION

OFFICIAL NAME  : REPUBLIC OF SENEGAL

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION : Senegal is situated in the west of the African continent; the river Senegal separates it from Mauritania in the north, from Mali in the east and from Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in the south. It is limited on the west by the Atlantic Ocean along a 330 mile long coastal front. A 28 mile wide enclave (the small state of Gambia) cuts the southern half and isolates the southern province of Casamanca from the rest ot the Senegalese territory.

AREA : 75 726 sq miles

CLIMATE : The climate is divided in 4 zones :
Coastal zone, north of Dakar, cool temperature from November to May
Sahelian zone, hot and dry climate
Sudanese zone, abundant rain
Casamanca zone, about 90 days of rain

PRIMARY SECTOR






AGRICULTURE : It makes up on average only 10% of the GDP, but feeds 60% of the population. It remains very dependent on climatic hazards. Main productions : corn, millet, sorghum, beans, niébé, riz paddy, manioc, water-melons, peanuts, cotton seed.

LIVE-STOCK : Makes up some 30% of the primary sector. One numbers 2 829 000 beef, 7 350 000 sheep and goats, 16 656 000 poultry, 177 000 hogs.

FISHING : It is mainly maritime, Senegalese fishing employs 15% of the population. Manual fishing, by far the most important, employs some 150,000 individuals and produces up to 18% of all catches. Industrial fishing, mainly coastal, comprises trawlers and sardine-boats.

THE MINES : The mining potential lies in phosphates, whose production accounts for 1,5% of world production and 3% of world exports. Diamond, copper , gold, iron, marble, ... reserves diversify the country's mining potential.

SECONDARY SECTOR






Food processing industries (oil-mills, sugar, fish products, flour-mills, beverages, ...) dominate this sector. Followed by extraction industries, the textile channel and chemical industries. Mechanics, cardboard paper, timber, construction material and energy industries are to be mentionned.

FOOD PROCESSING  : makes up 43% of the production index.

TERTIARY SECTOR






The ROAD NETWORK : Senegal owns a 8,700 mile long road network of which 2,485 miles are tarred, and 2,485 miles simply reinforced.

The RAILROAD is 761 miles long, including the DAKAR/BAMAKO line.

HARBOURS : One numbers 4 harbours : DAKAR (second West African harbour), ST LOUIS, KAOLACK, ZIGUINCHOR.

AIR TRANSPORT : Air lines in Senegal have developped through numerous agreements signed with European, American, Arab and Asian countries. The airport Léopold Sédar SENGHOR enjoys full infrastructures enabling it for all types of airplanes.
