PRIMARY SECTOR

AGRICULTURE roughly insures the Togolese nourishment security; the rural sector feeds some 80% of the population. Cultures are diverse: millet, sorghum, corn, manioc, yam, cocoa, coffee, karité; cotton is the main industrial crop and the first agricultural export product.

BREEDING & FISHING : Togo is not a traditional breeding country, and the production covers only a part of its needs. Currently the Togolese consume 33 pounds of fish per head and per year, four times the meat consumption. There are three large foreign companies settled in Togo, but fishing is mainly practised through manual ways.

MINING & ENERGY : Phosphate and hydroelectricity are Togo's two industrial assets. Phosphate represents over 40% of the export revenue. Phosphate is extracted by the OTP (Office Togolais des Phosphates). The government has undertaken a diversification policy in order to reduce dependence on this one product, the country having other mineral ressources: marble, attapulgite, manganese, limestone, iron, peat...
The Nangbeto hydroelectric dam on Mono river (a Togo-Benin joint project) provides between one quarter and one third of the electricity needs of both countries. Togo and Benin depend on Ghana for the other 70%.

SECONDARY SECTOR

Industrial enterprises are concentrated in the maritime region, and besides the large publicly owned enterprises, the Togolese industrial fabric comprises mainly small and medium-size companies. An "Industrial development action plan" has been elaborated with Onudi's support.

The MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY is widely dominated by food processing industries, based on transformation of local raw materials, followed by textile and leather, chemical, mechanical, electrical, paper and publishing... industries.

The PUBLIC WORKS SECTOR : Thanks to the rehabilitation, maintenance and road construction programs planned for by the PAS and the PDU (Urban Develpment Project financed by the World Bank), the public works sector offers prospects to enterprises approved by the Agetur (Urban Works Execution Agency)...

TERTIARY SECTOR

HARBOUR INFRASTRUCTURES : The LOME harbour is the only deepwater harbour of the sub-region (drawing 42.65 feet of water); it bears infrastructures and equipment enabling various types of traffic.

The LOME AIRPORT has a capacity of 700,000 passengers per year and can handle three large carriers simultaneously. 12 airline companies handle flights towards 36 destinations. In addition, a duty-free industrial airport zone of more than 10 acres is available to harbour industries and services using air transport.

NIAMTOUGO is the second airport situated in the north of Togo.

ROAD & RAILROAD NETWORKS : An important rehabilitation program for road maintenance has been put in the works and initiated in 1998; it has already enabled the completion of the rehabilitation of several sections. The north-south axis, which links Lomé to Dapaong and to the Burkinabese border, constitutes for Togo a significant asset for commercial trading.
The railroad network comprises 211 miles of railways, the main section being 171 miles long : Lomé - At
akpamé - Blitta (towards the north).

The BANKING SECTOR appears relatively protected until 1991 and despite the fact that the disorders occurring from 1951 on have affected it, the banking system has been spared from the severe crisis suffered in 1994 by the area's other countries. Currently, the Togolese banking system comprises 11 credit establishments, among them 5 commercial banks : UTB (previously a Crédit Lyonnais subsidiary), the BTCI (a BNP subsidiary), the BIA (owned by the Belgolaise), ECOBANK (private West-African shareholders) and the BTD (Banque Togolaise de Développement) owned by the State.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS : Togo / Telecom, whose privatization is planned for the beginning of 2001, was born out of the splitting up of the Office Nationales des Postes since 1997. Togo / Telecom has benefited from several lines of credit, namely for a telephone networks extension project, bringing the number of networks from 32 400 to 108 500 by the end of 2008.
